Capped 83 times for his native Holland, Rudi Krol was a defender of the highest order. He spent most of his career playing for his home town club, Ajax, until 1980 when he moved to the North American Soccer League to join Canadian outfit Vancouver Whitecaps where he played for just one season before leaving to play in Serie A with Napoli.

A crucial component in the Total Football Dutch and Ajax sides of the Seventies, Krol mainly played as a sweeper or left-back, however he could play anywhere across the back four or as a defensive midfielder.

Krol will always be remembered for a 25-yard screamer he scored against Argentina in the 1974 World Cup and being one of the best players to fail at the final hurdle in two finals.
