In 1984 Torino managed to beat local rivals, and clear favourites for the title, Juventus in the final standings. But despite this feat, it was not enough for an 8th league title, with Hellas Verona surprisingly taking the laurels.

Founded in 1906 and based in Turin, 'I Granata' (the Clarets), are the joint fifth most successful club in Italian football in terms of championships won, seven titles, first in 1927–28 and most recently in 1975–76.

They have also won the Coppa Italia five times. On the European stage, the nearest Torino came to success was in 1992 when they reached the UEFA Cup final; only to lose it in two aggregate matches to Ajax without being defeated.
