Enter the tax haven of Monaco, where Hoddle found his managerial soul mate in Arsene Wenger and joined a young George Weah and fellow Englishman Mark Hateley.

Monaco and Hoddle achieved instant success winning the 1987-88 Ligue 1 championship and progressing to the quarter finals of the European Cup the following year. For his effort Hoddle was voted Best Foreign Player in French football.
