Flamengo 1987 - No.10 Zico.

Often billed as ‘The White Pelé’, the predominantly right-footed Zico was blessed with skill in abundance, but he was much more direct and would attack at greater sustained pace than his legendary predecessor in the yellow number 10 shirt.

As much as he was undoubtedly South American, Zico could easily have passed for a Southern European player in his style of on-ball exuberance. If you need a modern-era equivalent to serve as a style comparison, then you would perhaps be looking towards Gianfranco Zola.

Zico continues to influence captivated audiences to this day. His is a career of high individual talent, coupled with collective successes during his time with Flamengo and Brazil.
Along with Lionel Messi, Johan Cruyff and Ferenc Puskás, Zico lives alongside the greatest players to be denied a World Cup winner’s medal.

Netherlands - No.20 Seedorf.

Regarded by many as one of the best midfielders of his generation Clarence Seedorf is one of the most decorated Dutch players ever, and has won domestic and continental titles while playing for clubs in the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Brazil.

He is considered one of the most successful players in UEFA Champions League history, as he is the first, and currently the only, player to have won the Champions League with three different clubs – once with Ajax, in 1995, once with Real Madrid, in 1998 and twice with Milan, in 2003 and 2007.

At international level, he represented the Netherlands on 87 occasions, and took part at three European Championships (1996, 2000, 2004) and the 1998 World Cup, reaching the semi-finals of the latter three tournaments.

Napoli 1999.

Having dropped out of the top flight in 1998, Napoli returned to Serie A after gaining promotion in the 1999–2000 season, though after a closely contested relegation battle, they were relegated immediately back down the following season.

This time it proved to be financially disastrous and the club could not recover, being declared bankrupt in 2004. They were eventually reinstated but had to give up there title Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli and became Napoli Soccer.

Lazio 1998 - No.13 Nesta.

Alessandro Nesta won all that there is as a player, and he did it with dignity and class. He came from a breed of defenders that made defending an art, executing slide tackles with the utmost timing and grace.

Widely considered to be one of the best centre backs of his generation, he played over 200 games for Lazio in nine seasons and was a key component in Lazio's 'golden age' of the late nineties.

Nesta's performances and success for Lazio during this period earned him three consecutive Serie A Defender of the Year awards between 2000 and 2002.

Financial problems for Lazio and then President Sergio Cragnotti led to the sale of Nesta to Milan in 2002 for €30,987,000. During this time, he would form a formidable defensive line alongside Paolo Maldini, Cafu, Alessandro Costacurta and Jaap Stam, among others.

Fiorentina 1996 - No.10 Rui Costa.

In Florence, city of the Renaissance, and just as legendary long-haired artists in the forms of Antognoni and Baggio had adorned the viola 10 shirt, Manuel Rui Costa used the Artemio Franchi pitch as his creative canvas.

A true midfield conductor, his style led to the nickname “il Maestro di Fiorenze” – the Maestro of Florence, however, despite a lack of genuine pace – although he seemed to glide around the pitch – his close control and dribbling abilities made sure he operated mostly as a trequartista rather than a functioning metronome in the deeper laying regista role.

Boca Juniors 1991 - No.9 Batistuta.

Gabriel Batistuta initially played basketball as a kid but after Argentina's victory in the 1978 World Cup, in which he was particularly impressed by the skills of Mario Kempes, he devoted himself to football.

Having played one season at bitter arch-rivals River Plate, Batistuta signed for Boca in 1990. He initially found it hard to find his best form, in part to not playing in his favoured position of striker.
However, at the beginning of 1991 Oscar Tabárez became Boca's coach, and he gave Batistuta the chance up front. 'Batigol' as he became known became the league's top scorer that season as Boca won the championship.

Borussia Dortmund 1997.

The mid-nineties was a golden period in Dortmunds history, a heyday where they shocked the world and became kings of Europe.
Nobody outside the doors of the Westfalenstadion could have envisaged what was to occur in 1997, where in front of their home nation, Die Borussen toppled Italy’s renowned force Juventus and brought the European Cup back to German soil for the first time in fourteen years.

Dortmund then went on to beat Brazilian club Cruzeiro 2–0 in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup Final, and in doing so became only the second German club to be world champions.
Although it was only a brief domination of world football, German commentator Marcel Reif put it: "The Brothers Grimm are turning in their grave - these are incredible stories!"
