California Surf 1981 - No.5 Alberto.

Widely regarded as one of the best defenders of all time, Brazilian World Cup winning captain Carlos Alberto was not only renowned for his great tackling and reading of the game, but also for his outstanding ball control, dribbling and playmaking abilities, which were quite rare at the time for a defender.
And of course he scored 'that goal' in the 1970 World Cup final, personally i havent seen better.

In 1977, despite his success in Brazil with Santos, Fluminese and Flamengo, Alberto decided to move to the New York Cosmos where he was reunited with his friend Pelé, pictured above with Beckenbauer and Cruyff, and helped the Cosmos capture two consecutive NASL titles in 1977 and 1978.

After spending one year as the marquee signing with the California Surf before they went bust, he returned to the Cosmos in 1982 where he won his third NASL title. He played his farewell game on 28 September 1982 in an exhibition match between the Cosmos and his former club Flamengo. In 119 regular season games and 26 playoff games, Alberto scored a total of 8 goals and was an NASL All-Star five times.

California Surf 1979.

Originally the St. Louis Stars, the California Surf were an NASL club based in Anaheim, California who played four outdoor and two indoor seasons between 1978 and 1981.
However Anaheim never turned into the kind of boom town that the NASL hoped for, and with the more attractive LA Aztecs down the road, and despite the inclusion of Brazilian legend Carlos Alberto in 1981, the Surf were folded later that year.

Juventus 1984 - No.10 Platini.

Regardless of Michel Platini's recent woes, nothing can ever take away from the fact he will be remembered as one of the best passers of a ball in history, as well as one of the best ever penalty and free kick specialists to have played the game.
Platini's career pinnacle came following his move to Italian powerhouse Juventus in 1982.
The Turin side was already packed full of Italy internationals, fresh from winning the World Cup in Spain, which made his introduction into the side quite a difficult one.

But, despite a rocky start to his Italian adventure, Platini would go on to become one of the most decorated players in Serie A history.
During his five-year spell with the Bianconeri he won the Scudetto on two ocassions (1984 and 1986), the European Cup Winners Cup and Super Cup (1984), the European Cup and Intercontinental Cup (1985) as well as finishing the league’s top scorer for three consecutive seasons between 1982 and 1985.
His personal triumphs included three straight European Footballer of the Year, Balon d'Or awards and was twice voted World Soccer magazine’s Player of the Year.

Platini did not have incredible pace or strength, nor was he renowned for being a great dribbler but he had a superb range of passing that would make any ‘trequartista’ green with envy, coupled with the finishing prowess most strikers would give up their right arm for.
He seemingly had a sixth sense when creating goals for strikers Roberto Bettega and Paolo Rossi, who thrived on the service.

With a calmness and composure, Platini scored 68 goals in 147 domestic appearance for the Old Lady. Not such a bad haul in the days when Serie A defences were as brutal as they were efficient.
Platini's playing career is one that has few equals "I played for Nancy because it was my hometown club and the best in Lorraine, for Saint-Étienne because it was the best team in France, and for Juventus because it is the best team in the world!"

Udinese 1983 - No.10 Zico.

Often called the "White Pelé", Zico was gifted with excellent technical ability and vision and was arguably the world's best player of the late 1970s and early 80s.
Having spent 12 seasons at boyhood club Flamengo, during which time he inspired them to a world club title, Zico was a wanted man in Europe.

After receiving offers from AS Roma and AC Milan, moving to Italy seemed right and a four-million dollar proposal from Udinese was on the table. Such amount of money made bigger clubs pressure the FIGC that blocked the transfer expecting financial guarantees. This caused a commotion in Udine as enraged Friulians flocked to the streets in protest against the Italian federation and government. At the end of the controversy, the deal went through and though leaving Flamengo fans in sadness, Zico made the Friulians fans finally dream of better days.

During his first season in Serie A, Zico delivered exactly what he had promised scoring 19 goals. He played flamboyantly, captivating the supporters of his new club. His partnership with World Cup winner, Franco Causio, threatened to take Udinese to the next level yet the team failed to truly deliver and could only manage ninth in the table.

The following season consisted of injuries and suspensions for Zico, the latter for openly attacking referees.
To add to Zico's woes, he was also having legal problems and was charged with tax evasion, which included a hefty fine and jail time. Unsurprisingly instead of serving his prison sentence, Zico decided to leave Italy and return to Brazil.
It was a sour end to a magical stay on the peninsula. However, to this day Udinese fans still fly Zico banners as a tribute to one of the most beloved 'Little Zebra’s' in the clubs history.
