At the beginning of the 20th Century, several young Italians decided to start a club that would be representative of the Italian community, and face the big names of São Paulo's soccer elite. During the World War II, Brazil entered the war supporting the allies and its dictatorship forced Palestra Italia to change its name because of the reference to Italy.
Palmeiras, as they became known, are now one of the most successful clubs in Brazilian football, having won 10 national competitions, a record in the country.
