AC Milan 1989 - No.9 van Basten.
Arguably the greatest goal scorer the game has ever seen, Marco van Basten
had everything. Quick, powerful, two footed with tremendous close control
and supreme in the air, the 'Swan of Utrecht' was the complete striker.
Signed in 1987 from Ajax, he scored 90 goals in 147 games for 'il diavolo'.
Joined by countrymen Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit, van Basten sparked the Italian club to multiple domestic League titles and Cup victories. He was named the Ballon d'Or winner in 1989 and 1990 as Milan won back to back European Cup titles.
In 1992, he became the first player to score four goals in a European Cup match and just the third player to win three Ballon d'Or Awards, alongside Cruyff and Platini.
Later that year he was crowned Fifa World Player of the year, to complete an amazing club career.
Unfortunately the ankle injuries that had occurred after years of brutal tackling from outplayed opponents finally took their toll the following season.
He returned for the last few games in the 1993 season, before Milan lost to Marseille in the Champions League final. The match was Van Basten's final game for the Rossoneri. The gifted striker spent the next two years undergoing multiple operations and rehabilitation before finally announcing his retirement in August 1995, at age 30.
